Has the institutional church forgotten the purpose of its structures?

Reactions:
How should the members of subsystems respond when the hierarchy has forgotten its tasks: achieving coordination among and maintaining autonomy of subsystems? The leaders response?

How do you recognize church when you see it?

Reactions:
Whether an organic church, with minimal structure and no real hierarchy, or an institutional church, with elaborate structure and clear hierarchy, what makes church Church?

Only trust will suffice...

Reactions:
do we assume we’re safe because we’re Christians?
because we do the right things?

but God decides right:
loving trust is right—
knowing, not trying.

What does God want you to be doing while you're waiting for the end?

Reactions:
on the front-end he gives all we need.
on the back-end he gives his happiness.
in-between he gives challenge and correction.

Proper fear of God is the source of wisdom

Reactions:
Grace,
the freedom of it frees,
but sometimes
flesh takes advantage,
forgets fearful glory,
the terrifying splendor of God,
and runs to its own ways.

Today's Ecclesiological two cents: not elder-rule, but elder-led Head-rule

Reactions:
We need elders—note plural—who lead, stepping out first and living lives that look so much like Jesus that we cannot help but follow.

Why would the Father send his Son to die? It seems unfair and wrong.

Reactions:
Let us wipe from our minds the fantastic notion that a selfish Father sent a poor unfortunate Son to clean up the Father's mess. That is NOT the case. The sovereign, just, loving God, who is Father, Son, and Spirit, one God, gave to clean up our mess. Those who are cut off from him have willfully rejected his gift. His offer remains.

Why does it seem God is mean to some and nice to others?

Reactions:
Relationship with God determines the nature of one’s experience of God’s justice.

Those who trust experience bounty, while those who refuse to trust experience wrath.

Mental Transformation--round two has begun

Reactions:
Monday, February 9, 2009, I started round two of Mental Transformation. In this round, I am listening through the TaNaKh and NT in one run.

This is part of who we are, but there is surely more:

Reactions:
  • We carry his influence.
  • Our life together is real life.
  • We are his building, fit together and connected in him.
Let us be his people.

This morning, I prayed through Isaiah 24-27. I'm praying still...

Reactions:
God is for those who trust him, against those who don’t.
Our trust is weak; our love is shallow.
Train us to trust and love.

What is your boat?

Reactions:
Learning to see him, discerning his voice from all the other voices, yet all for naught if satisfied with security, comfort, and mediocrity.

Act already!

Discipleship: a systems problem needing systems solutions?

Reactions:
What if it is not the elements of discipleship, but the connections and influences that are the basis of our lack in disciple-making?

What then?

Paprika, Matcha, and Red Bell Pepper Coulis?

Reactions:
  • Breakfast Pucks*: the usual oat extravaganza, this time with sunflower seeds and seasoned with Smoked Spanish Paprika
  • Cauliflower Omelet: cauliflower, tossed in matcha and olive oil and roasted to creamy goodness, set in egg white
  • Salad: the usual assortment with a red bell pepper coulis-esque/avocado dressing
* "Pucks" resemble muffins, but their density and weight have a bit more in common with these.

Are we ready to pursue our walk with God in new and fresh ways or levels of intensity?

Reactions:
We know we are stuck, yet we convince ourselves we are happy here. But we are not.

Growth takes recognition, decision, and trust in grace.
