I agree - in the classroom the computer or iPad are too much trouble. Learning to take clear notes is a key learning skill - one I still use.

About a year ago, I started using a version of Cornell notes (http://coe.jmu.edu/LearningToolbox/cornellnotes.html) and have found it incredibly useful to my learning, retention, and subsequent reflection. Using a pen and paper to do so increases the effectiveness in my book.
