We are always worshipers, only the object changes.

Human will, stained and unredeemed, worships gods of its own choosing. This is always so. Cleansed and redeemed by the Sovereign Creator, we worship him.

  1. Human will, stained and unredeemed, can't worship the One True God. This is always so. Cleansed and redeemed by the Sovereign Creator, the regenerated man is now free to worship Him. By the renewing of his mind, he should walk in the light as He is in the light, lest he deceives himself and walks in darkness.

Raise up HOLY hands to the Lord, not unholy hands. The redeemed can do either.

  2. I am reminded of Augustine's worship recommendation: love God and do as you please. Of course, this requires one to actually love God (otherwise the "what we want" will be of the flesh). Here's my thinking: we need to focus on loving God how he wants to be loved and stop getting our knickers in a twist about practices. If we, the redeemed, are focused on loving Christ, our new self will express itself in Christ-honoring ways.

This is, of course, much easier to say than to do. :-)
