The procrastinator’s time warp

Somehow, the length of minutes shortens the closer I get to a deadline, yet in planning tasks, this commonly known phenomenon deftly escapes my memory.

So much to know and so little time

There has always been more to know than our capacity to comprehend, but with the increasing pace, our knowledge of that gap has grown clear.

Weekend Happenings: 6/26 issue

The cherries are about to ripen. Unfortunately, the birds know this and they get first dibs.

The sweet peas have begun to bloom.

Ann's porch tomatoes have begun to bloom.

My first summer book is almost done.

The world is still green in places.

I dropped the lounge chair on my foot. Ouch.

Places I wait: the mountain office

A patio, comfy seats, ample trees, the random squirrel, a host of birds singing in the background: these are the furnishings of my mountain office.

The pleasure of minimally adorned food

So many set aside cooking for fear of difficult complexity, when all is needed is a bit of olive oil and a dash of pepper.

Love is a skill we decide to practice

Sure, there’s a constellation of attached emotions, but love itself is not an affective response to stimuli. It’s a decided way of behaving toward others.

Places I wait: the rolling office

Most every weekday morning I am on a bus thinking about something, whether school or my own mental tangents. This morning it is blogging; tomorrow it ought to be curriculum development. We shall see.

Just a word before I go...

carry on
trusting

so bowing
as secured, yet filtering
by Spirit alone.

Follow
focusing on your call
giving yourself
boldly telling his truth

despite costs.

The reason science is necessary but not sufficient

The scientific mind tries so hard to understand reality, employing empirical tools, ignoring the crux: the organizing principle of reality is the personal, triune God.

Places I wait: back from the Saturday walk

Oddly my most impatient place. Somehow this bus never comes as scheduled.
I guess there should be a lesson in there, but I am not in a learning mood just now.

Places I wait: the morning transfer

On good days the bus is early and I wait on a warm bus seat across from the same high school employee. On bad days the freeway off ramp eats up the wait time and i am relegated to the tile bus stop bench.

Places I wait: going to work phase 1

Dark on some level nearly every day, but i have adapted. Not sure what that says to you, but I think it makes me ponder more.

Places I wait: going home phase 1

The light changes with season and schedule, sometimes bright green enhanced by setting sun. Other times gray of dusk or brightness of noon colors the view.

Metaphor as Perception

When designing a complex and creative process, what would it look like to start with a metaphor as a perceptive tool, using concepts as feedback?

The funny language of apparent-real estimation

The IR version of “about” is rather amusing. For example, Biola had “about” 6,123 students in fall 2010. Sounds quite precise, does it not?

Amusing clash of cultures: the importance of a fan

Next table, four ladies sit, two French, two Southern. Gifts exchange, fan given: “For church!” says a Southern woman. “For church?” says a French woman.
