LOVE GOD AND DO AS YOU WISH!

Reflection

I am reminded of Augustine's scandalous statement, "Love God and do as you wish." For those who understand the depth and extent of this love, the statement is not scandalous, but rather comforting and convicting. The truth is, I do not love God as I should. You probably don't either. So, what to do? Augustine's dictum teaches us that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are secondary concerns. Our primary concern is to learn to love this One who is sovereign over all, who judges his enemies, and who keeps covenant. All else flows from this one striving.

NOTE: Lest anyone think this is cause for license, please do note that the dictum must NEVER be reversed. It is never "Do as you wish and love God."
