Getting more of Jesus: Talbot convocation
I am realizing this is my last Talbot convocation as a student taking courses. It is also Dr. Dirks' last as Dean. These two factors make his focus on Jesus all the more appropriate.
Text: Matthew 16:13-20
Son of Man
Born of a human, but also having authority and giving himself as sacrifice. Filled with eschatological meaning, yet communicating incarnational humility.
Getting It
The people didn't really get it. They thought Jesus was John or Elijah or some other prophet. But Peter nailed it: Jesus is the promised anointed one, the son of the living God.
From Getting It to Being It
In this context, Peter's role as first leader of the ecclesia is declared, showing that understanding -- based on revelation rather than merely on reason -- opens the door to being. A few verses later (22ff) we see Peter in process: he doesn't get the full import of Jesus as Anointed One. This humble one is Almighty God, the Sovereign Creator.

Be Intentional or Ride the Wave?
Holy Time Has Begun: Fall 2009
For the first time since the spring term in 2008, I have once again entered holy time as of 8/26/09. In keeping with Biola requirement and personal conviction (truth-telling and promise-keeping), I abstain from alcoholic beverages during the school term. My last glass for regular time was a lovely smoked porter from Stone (a beautiful thing).
Agreement with the requirement is irrelevant: this school is worth at least this small sacrifice. Despite my desire for policy change (in case you missed the subtle hint in the last sentence), I have found the discipline to be helpful, as it experientially reminds me that my academic life is an offering to God.
If they ever change the rule for grad students, I can honestly say I don't know how I will respond.

PLEASED, SURPRISED, GRATEFUL
I have just returned from the annual Talbot Awards Chapel. Mind you, I knew I was receiving an award (and I knew which one guided my thesis writing), but I had no clue about the other one.
When I began the Th.M. program, I decided to focus my efforts on the Zondervan Outstanding Master's Thesis Award. Not merely for the recognition, but also for what the award recognizes: a thesis with implications for the life of the church. That notion--that good theological research has implications for the church--is and ought to be the evaluative criteria for theological study. Otherwise, what is the point?
Regarding this one, I am pleased.
Then there is the surprise: The Robert N. Oliver Award in Systematic Theology. I must say, not only did I have no idea and am literally shocked. You see, in every systematics (especially Th.M.) course at Talbot, I have felt like the proverbial fish out of water. I'd say 99% of the Th.M. students are detail-analytics. I, on the other hand, am a global-analytic, tending decisively toward integrated-systems thinking (I started out my academic career studying environmental systems). My blood pulses for seeing how things function (especially creatively) on the stable framework of truth.
Regarding this one, I am surprised (though, honestly, pleased :-).
But in big picture, these temporal recognitions, though important, pale in comparison to the truth: everything good thing I am, every good thing I have, every good thing I have done (feel free to replace the "I" with "we") is made possible by the grace revealed most remarkably in Jesus Christ--Creator, Savior, Lord.
So I end the way Awards Chapel began: Colossians 1:13-18.

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.God, let worship not be mere duty, but the deepest cry of my heart.
The Preeminence of Christ
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Later today I will be ordering tickets for the May 22 Baccalaureate.
Next Tuesday, I will turn in the last class paper for my Th.M.--TOGETHER IN THE ALREADY: THE KINGDOM IN FRANK VIOLA’S ORGANIC CHURCH ECCLESIOLOGY.
Next Wednesday, I will be taking part two of my comprehensive examination.
Next week, as soon as possible, I will begin reading a relaxing book--maybe Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but who knows...

HUMBLE-CONTRITE-TREMBLING
Tomorrow, Talbot School of Theology holds is Fall 2007 Convocation. While the fall term started last Wednesday--the day when I entered "academic time" and the enjoyments of regular time are set aside (more on that later)--Convocation stands as the beginning point. Our dean, Dr. Dirks, will be speaking on "Humble, Contrite, and Trembling" (his passage is below). For me, this marks the beginning of the end of my Master of Theology program: the writing of the thesis draft. I have entered this process with excitement and fear. Tomorrow at 9:30 AM PDT, I will place myself under Dr. Dirks' teaching and I expect my (somewhat self-centered) excitement and fear to be chastened and corrected by the Word.
Blessed are you, Father, Son, Spirit, who has given us your Word and Yourself. I ask you to chasten my heart that I might reach and stretch for you.

NEW TERM...MORE READING & THINKING
School starts today. The ritual has transitioned me back into academic time: Saturday lunch I enjoyed an IPA. Now such things have been put away until summer and Sunday morning I made a lovely jug of barley-hops tea...good stuff! (really!)
This term I'm continuing my research on emerging church ecclesiology, studying the theology of Matthew with Michael Wilkins, and reflecting on the missional theology of Lesslie Newbigin with Tom Steffen.
I'll be pre-posting books on Stuff I've Read (and updating as I finish reading), writing weekly reflections/summaries/whatever on Laura's Writings and Who in the world are we?
