A place for gathering the bits from the waste book

If I can muster the discipline, this is what I want my blog to be: the recipient of the contents of a waste book, a place to systematize the random ideas, observations, and encounters of the day. Of course, this means having the discipline to capture the bits.

I am torn between leveraging Evernote and playing in the Moleskine for use as a waste book. But then, maybe a combination of both is in order, for the type of thinking done with pen and paper is often different (for me) than the type of thinking done with finger and smart phone.

Time will tell.

For those wondering what a "waste book" is...

"Tradesmen have their 'waste book' (scrawl-book, composition book I think in German), in which they enter from day to day everything they buy and sell, everything all mixed up without any order to it, from there it is transferred to the day-book, where everything appears in more systematic fashion ... This deserves to be imitated by scholars. First a book where I write down everything as I see it or as my thoughts put it before me, later this can be transcribed into another, where the materials are more distinguished and ordered." Maybe I've just gone out for coffee: a blogger's vacation?

I guess one could call it an extended coffee break, this blog silence. Fact is, I've no clear notion of the cause behind the silence. Could be that I'm in a phase of input since the purchase of a Kindle (it's amazing how many books you can get through: cool). Could be my writing has gone to other venues (I'm journaling through Artist's Way). Could be summer vacation mindset, who knows.

On the other hand, school starts next week (two more terms of coursework in the Ph.D.) and I certainly hope to have something to say. We'll see.

Writing Poetry with a Tangent Matrix

A while ago, I started using the tangent matrix concept to write the poems for this blog. I am finding the practice creatively effective (in a monkeybar sort of way), so I thought I'd pass along the process.

Below is the tangent matrix for Disciple-Making as Love. The column labels were determined in advance of hearing the sermon and resulted from a devotional lectio on chapter 15 (Loving Yourself) in Practicing the Presence of People by Mason. The row labels are sparse notes from a sermon preached by Paul R. Gupta at Torrance First Baptist on Sunday, April 11.

Using my Moleskine, I wrote the sparse notes in the row header and forced ideas into the cells as the sermon was being preached. Since I limit most of my posts to 25 words, I counted the words in each row (this time, not counting the row title) as I went along. Here is the matrix.

Since the title should match the contents...

...I slightly modified my blog's title to "Laura's (Tangential) Writings."

It's more accurate and warns folks about the apparent lack of theme (though, there is a theme: note the subtitle).

For further clarification, here is the American Heritage Dictionary definition of "tangential."

Merely touching or slightly connected.
Only superficially relevant; divergent.

There is a connecting thread and that thread is me. So, welcome to my mind, dear readers. :-)

Commenting Reminder

I'm getting picky in my old age: comments really need to be clearly on point. I will not approve comments that say, "Good post," or any such thing. At the very least, it is not engaging and at worst, it is spam.

Today is a holiday here in the USA: one involving lots of food (some primal; some not so primal). I freely admit that it is highly likely some grain may pass my lips today (some did yesterday, but it was panettone, one of the breads for which I will go off the primal rails; see above). Thanks to all those who stop by my little, tangentized blog. If you are celebrating this day, celebrate well, don't worry about "working off the dinner" (that doesn't work anyhow; live 80-20 and relax), be present with those around the table, enjoy the football games (or at least don't make faces at those who do), and don't go to be full (it does bad things to your throat).

Blognote

Anyhow, a bit of a blognote: yesterday, I monetized this blog (I know, I know). Do know, that I either own, use, or have used everything in Laura's Tangentized Associates Store. My promise to my readers is that, aside from the widget in the sidebar, I'll not put distracting bits on the blog. I will, though, place logical links inside posts: for example, if I blog about a dish I made with a particular ingredient or am writing about a particular book, I insert a link to the item in my store. Also, I plan on reviewing some items, so there will be links, and likely widgets, on those posts.

Why did I do this? Well, while blogger is free, not all blogging is free, so I'd like to fill the increasing money hole. Further, I appreciate it when other bloggers share links to good stuff, so I've decided to do the same.

Blog Silence and the Busy Mind

Wow. I've not posted since 10/5, who knew. Being in a Ph.D. program changes the blogging schedule a bit--I'm still getting the kinks out (obviously).

UPDATE 2: still having a few issues inside Blogger and I'm not yet happy with the color scheme in the three column format, but it's coming along.

UPDATE 3: tweaked it a bit more, moving both sidebars to the right, trimming sidebar contents a bit.
