Daylight savings, my eye

For the late risers who are wondering where the lovely evening light came from, observe this pictoral evidence:

I rest my case. Maybe.

Designer Panhandler

Dude, if you're going to panhandle, ditch the fancy jacket, backpack, shoes, etc. Plus, your sign was way too nice.

Does four feet of red curb make sense?

I saw this the other day in Torrance, CA. Okay, maybe it's to keep folks from parking too close together? No clue.

Any ideas?

Waiting 3

Last week, I sat in the near dark, alone at the bus stop, on my way to Dallas for the NAPCE Conference. From bus, to train, to shuttle, to plane, to taxi, I arrived at the Westin Galleria in Dallas, which is rather like the South Bay Galleria in Torrance, CA. Due to this similarity and the schedule, I regret that I did not experience Dallas despite spending nearly three days. I did end my trip properly, though, dining on tasty BBQ.

Yum.

Waiting 2

You can nearly always peg those who are forced into transit and would rather drive: they pace, tap, mutter, and scowl. The rest of us, the true transit people, just wait. The bus will come and worry will not hurry it along.

Waiting

We sit.
No real control, except over ourselves.
But isn't that always the way?

It's a night and day difference

Nearly every weekday morning of the year, I walk to the bus before dawn. I've come to realize that I like it that way. The weather is cooler before dawn, the people are quieter, the bus and train are more subdued: I guess it just feels cozy. Of course, it also helps that the neighborhood troublemakers are still asleep when I'm heading out.

If my schedule ever changes and I begin leaving in the light, I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it. Then again, to be human is to adapt, so I guess I'll muddle through.

this last leg until home

Most days I wait in this place, sometimes patient and sometimes not. Regardless, it is an unpressured place, for I've no schedule.

Not all last legs are like that. I recently completed coursework for a Ph.D. and am one step from the last leg of my program. I have no delusions about portfolio and dissertation being unpressured. Still, they are the last leg before home and that is enough for now.

The sunflower-litterer correlation: a mystery

Why is it that sunflower seed eaters have such a tough time finding the trash can?

The dawn's amber light

I get up and out early every work day. One reason is transit time, but this is not the main reason. I get up and out early to watch and hear the world wake up. Singing birds, dawn sky, and the amber hue of street lights draw me out.

What is it about bus stops that attracts jerks?

Sitting at the bus stop draws the strangest "humor" from folks. Not sure of it's some sort of perceived social class thing or what, but I get more car drivers and passengers yelling out rude, demeaning, and disgusting things in my direction. It's like some weird, emotional hit and run. Where's a cop when you need one?

The litterbugs of transit--urg!

It's a small thing, but would it have been so hard to pick up your napkin and toss it in the trash bin located at the bus stop where you got off? Seriously.

The long walk

The long walk, or so the visual effect would make is seem. In reality, it's maybe a half mile, but walking between this block wall and the busy street, with no breaks, seems longer: especially on days when my "spidy sense" tingles

This is not your dressing station

Once a week or so, as I walk down the road to campus, I see a young woman (the same young woman) standing at the wall in front of someone's yard and putting on her make up.

It seems odd that one would do this on the sidewalk. Makes me go, Hmmm.

The train, the train!

Okay, so no one actually says that, but then, it's a little after 5:30 in the morning and even the chipper people are quiet. In fact, if anyone did yell out like Tatoo on Fantasy Island, they'd probably be glared upon by the gathered travelers.
