Getting more of Jesus: Talbot convocation

Reactions:
I am realizing this is my last Talbot convocation as a student taking courses. It is also Dr. Dirks' last as Dean. These two factors make his focus on Jesus all the more appropriate.

Text: Matthew 16:13-20

Son of Man
Born of a human, but also having authority and giving himself as sacrifice. Filled with eschatological meaning, yet communicating incarnational humility.

Getting It
The people didn't really get it. They thought Jesus was John or Elijah or some other prophet. But Peter nailed it: Jesus is the promised anointed one, the son of the living God.

From Getting It to Being It

In this context, Peter's role as first leader of the ecclesia is declared, showing that understanding -- based on revelation rather than merely on reason -- opens the door to being. A few verses later (22ff) we see Peter in process: he doesn't get the full import of Jesus as Anointed One. This humble one is Almighty God, the Sovereign Creator.

Jesus is the majestic one, the one with whom we have to do

Talbot's new digs are getting closer to done

Reactions:
Some windows are in, bricks attached, pond base laid, and even drywall inside. It's exciting stuff! Good job Bascom et al.

Farewell to summer. ..

Reactions:
Tomorrow my summer ends. Classes start and I once again commit myself Biola's student contract. While there are times I greatly dislike the restrictions, I also see and agree with their benefits. So, I willingly return to holy time and say farewell to the ale I so enjoy, for I value the learning and the community more than fleeting pleasures.

Should we trust or act?

Reactions:
The question is a false dichotomy. Footwork is necessary, but it's outcomes are non-linear. Doing and trusting are both required.

On my plate lately - Solitude Retreat edition

Reactions:

Friday dinner: Salad of mixed greens and heirloom tomatoes with a dressing of melted butter and caramelized onions; Rib eye steak, cooked in butter and seasoned with fresh thyme. I ate the salad and tasted the steak: it was very large.

Saturday breakfast, leftover steak fried up with fresh Italian sausage, served with sauerkraut and cucumber.

Saturday lunch: salad of mixed greens, heirloom tomato, greek olives, and raw milk gouda, with a dressing of melted butter and sauteed onion and garlic

Saturday dinner: soup made of leftover steak and sausage mince with some onion, all in a broth made from the rib eye bone (cooked 6 hours) and a luscious can of coconut milk. This was awesome!

Sunday breakfast: more Italian sausage, fried up with leftover soup from the night before. I could not eat all of this, so I took the remainder home and had it Monday night as a soup with some bone broth--again, Awesome.

Maybe I've just gone out for coffee: a blogger's vacation?

Reactions:
I guess one could call it an extended coffee break, this blog silence. Fact is, I've no clear notion of the cause behind the silence. Could be that I'm in a phase of input since the purchase of a Kindle (it's amazing how many books you can get through: cool). Could be my writing has gone to other venues (I'm journaling through Artist's Way). Could be summer vacation mindset, who knows.

On the other hand, school starts next week (two more terms of coursework in the Ph.D.) and I certainly hope to have something to say. We'll see.

What have you been up to this summer?

Becoming what the blesser sees

Reactions:
Earlier this year, one of my profs ended the course by speaking into each person's life a metaphor of what she saw there.

Her metaphor for me was sheltering tree: steadfast, strong, capable, and protective. I cannot express how my soul responded to this blessing, for words are insufficient.

I will say that I aim to become the sort of person she sees.

The things you find...an egret

Reactions:
On my morning campus walk, I decided to go to the creek to see the ducks. Well, no ducks were to be found, but there was an egret strolling on the bank.

The resurrection is the point!

Reactions:

that moment everything changed

roads and language converged
spreading moments
this day, choose!

tomb and tale speak truth
so, choose!

this unique One rules all
