Plants are weird and I'd like to explain how, if only...

Leaves, stems, trunks roots: these are things the average person can recognize and classify. Sometimes, though, it's not that easy.

This tree does not have leaves. I'd also not call those needles--as in pine. So, what are they. I'm sure there are some experts who know, but why aren't such terms more common in our language?

Just wondering.
