The mind as a gate protecting the values

Main idea: The mind adds a layer of protection by providing materials for building values and by engaging and evaluating values communicated by others.

We are surrounded by entertainment. Its enjoyments hold the mind in pleasant attention while distracting from other things. This can be good or bad, and our engagement makes a difference.

As I mentioned the other day, art and entertainment always communicate the beliefs and values of those who created the works. Taking these works of art or entertainment into the soul without proper filters can allow false beliefs and values into the soul, all the while thinking one merely is enjoying beauty or diversion. Engaging the mind can add a layer of protection.

I can see two lines of protection that the mind provides regarding values. The mind does preemptive work by feeding the soul with God's truth, building structures of knowledge, and ruminating truth into the heart. The mind also does contemporaneous and post-exposure work, uncovering the communicated values and comparing them with biblical values.

Reminding myself again: The one who consumes the work must take care to engage the mind, especially regarding values, lest another's values enter the soul without resistance.
