Focusing on Jesus redefines and reorients affections like anger.
For the believers predisposed to anger, focus on Jesus is required and difficult. Without such a focus, the soul breaks forth against others with little restraint. But the believer's identity in Christ remains in the heart of her soul, and her capacity to focus increases with practice, just as strength increases with physical exercise.
This does not mean anger will cease to burst forth, but it does mean that turning away from the anger and toward Jesus becomes more common and focus begins to take place before anger paralyzes the soul into wrath. So, "Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil" (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV) and to keep looking to Jesus (Hebrews 12).
