NEW TERM...MORE READING & THINKING

School starts today. The ritual has transitioned me back into academic time: Saturday lunch I enjoyed an IPA. Now such things have been put away until summer and Sunday morning I made a lovely jug of barley-hops tea...good stuff! (really!)

This term I'm continuing my research on emerging church ecclesiology, studying the theology of Matthew with Michael Wilkins, and reflecting on the missional theology of Lesslie Newbigin with Tom Steffen.

I'll be pre-posting books on Stuff I've Read (and updating as I finish reading), writing weekly reflections/summaries/whatever on Laura's Writings and Who in the world are we?

THE COMPLEX CHRIST

I'm blogging on Kester Brewin's The Complex Christ at Who in the world are we?

Right now, I'm trying to get at the essence of his argument, so I'd welcome comment, question, and correction from those who have read the book (and others :-).

BIBLE 'TIL I'M DONE: JAN 27

Isaiah 40:1-31

Isaiah 40:27-28
Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD,
and my right is disregarded by my God"?
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.

I CRASHED WHILE WALKING

So, this morning I'm walking the self-imposed mile to campus. It's a slight down hill--easy walk for this portion. Then, not 25 yards into the trip, my toe catches a uneven piece of pavement. Running forward with my body at a near 45-degree angle to the ground--the down hill ground--and a 20 pound (or so) back pack on my back, I realized all hope was lost. The ground rushed up, slammed into my knee and my nose...yes, my nose. Thankfully, it did not hit hard enough to break the nose. It's just bruised and ever so slightly blue. The knee looks much better than it did this morning, though it is swollen and scraped. I'll recover, but I'm thinking that the waking up process tomorrow morning is going to be a bear.

BIBLE 'TIL I'M DONE: JAN 20

Isaiah 37:1-39:8

Isaiah 39:5-8
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD of hosts: Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the LORD. And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon." Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, "The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good." For he thought, "There will be peace and security in my days."

BEDROCK BELIEFS lesson four readings

UPDATE: days complete

Day 16: Isaiah 53:1-6
Who has believed what they heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
...
But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities v 1, 5a

I tend to divide God into at least two handy categories. One category is God-the-Ruler. He is the sovereign strong one, the One who will not countenance sin. The other category is God-the-Redeemer. He is the humble Savior, who gives himself for his people. Truth is, though, that God is Ruler-Redeemer. He is God of the strong arm and God wounded for our transgressions.
Day 17: Isaiah 53:7-12
...and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
...
when his soul makes an offering for sin,
he shall see his offspring...
v 8b, 10b

We are the legacy of a sacrifice. There is weight to this truth that escapes me. Not that the fact of the weight (glory) escapes me, but the experience of it. there are moments when the experience is overwhelming and response overflows in emotion. But most of the time it is a quiet, nearly hidden act of dumbstruck-ness. Sometimes, I hide it so well that I forget, yet the Spirit in my heart does not forget.
Day 18: Colossians 1:18-23
"...reconciled in his body of flesh..." v 22

incarnation
ecclesia
this brand new thing,
intertwined.
neither without the other
the Divine Invader reconciles
Yahweh, insiders, outsiders.
Amazing!
Day 19: Romans 8:1-11
"...God has done what the law weakened by the flesh could not do" v 3a

weak flesh tries
to no avail
and
only brokenness and inability
remain.
trust is
--has always been--
the only answer.
God doing completely
what we cannot do at all.

Lord, you are fully able and I am not. Too often I trust my inability rather than your complete ability. Thank you for grace that cleanses.
Day 20: 1 Corinthians 15:51-58
"...and we shall be changed." v 52c
There is brokenness into which I have run headlong. Even in this there is hope, for God will accomplish his work.

My heart hurts when I willfully put myself in the way. Here I am broken, less broken than before, but still broken. Here I learn righteousness, yearning, reaching for that day when I will be righteousness in him.

SIGNS OF INDIVIDUALISM

I've been thinking this week about how individualism has infected American Christianity and two phrases came to mind:
  • "personal Savior"
  • "personal quiet time/bible study"
Looking at Genesis 1 (verse 27 especially), it seems that the image of God would be primarily and most accurately reflected in humanity as a whole ("he created them"), though his image is reflected in individuals as well ("he created him"). There should be, I think, a balance between the two notions. Problem is, our individualistic culture has skewed reality to such a degree that God's image in humanity must be emphasized.

So, where else do we see individualism in the church? How do we encourage balance? How do we protect against the almost inevitable over compensation?

If the Holy Spirit is a person, we’ll want Him to get hold of us.

BACK FROM WINTER RESURGENCE

This past weekend (Jan 12-14) was the TFB College 2007 Winter Resurgence. Before we left, I prayed that God would grab us by the cheeks and turn our faces to gaze upon his face. Looking back, I think I would change the word "grab" to "hold", for resurgence was much more subtle than expected. I'll post more after hearing the students' tell their stories at the Tuesday Gathering.

For now, I thank God for the beautiful scenery, the cooperation-encouraging weather (shoveling snow, etc), and the willingness of the participants to try things that were new.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a glimpse into our weekend:
Our schedule:
Our prayer:
...that we would know the story of God for what it is—God's glorious work through all of time, bringing everything into conformity to his will—and would be honest about the story of ourselves—that we are messy people learning to follow Jesus.
...that we would be the people of God—members of Christ's body and members with all Christ-followers (even those who do not seem to be as spiritual as we are). We commit ourselves to connection with the believers at TFB, actively participating in the life of our local congregation.
...that we would expand the kingdom, not only by telling others about Jesus, but also by taking a hard look at our lifestyle choices, by being broken by our own worldly conformity, and by deciding to live lives that point to Jesus.
Our mission: Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...and a visual glimpse...

First, a bit of my own special lunacy. This is my bed for the weekend. Yes, it is outside. Yes, it was 10 degrees. No, I was not cold. Frankly, it was awesome. On Saturday morning, I awoke to quietly chatty birds (followed by rather loud and obnoxious--though beautiful--blue jays. Amazing.
DSCF2426

Icicles at Jensen's Mini-mart in Cedar Glen.
DSCF2436

The front patio. Compare summer.
I tromped through the snow to get my bed from the far corner. Too fun.
DSCF2427

View driving in on Friday. This does not even come close to the full effect. The sun was setting, all orange and pink, washing the mountains in color. The deciduous trees were covered with a layer of ice, making them look like crystal trees. Sometimes the scenery was so beautiful, I nearly had to weep.
DSCF2424

Unpacking it all will take time.

BEDROCK BELIEFS lesson three readings

UPDATE: days complete
Day 11: Genesis 1:26-31
"...let us make humanity in our image..." v26a

Alone and together we bear the image of God. Together, the image is richer, deeper, and more complete than alone. Together, we are conformed to the image of the Son (Eph 4:11-16).

Lord God, we need to understand our essential community. We--especially those of us in Western, individualistic cultures--need to understand that we ARE community. It is neither a choice nor a program.
Day 12: Genesis 3:1-12
But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." v4-5

At our self-infected core, we wish to be God. The serpent pegged it. In fact, we are quite certain that we are gods. We are sure that good and evil are ours to decide ("...but it doesn't feel wrong..."). but this is the sin that polluted us all, this usurping of divine right, this making ourselves like God. How can we not see that we, humanity, bear his image?
Day 13: Genesis 3:13-19
Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" v13a

God's partnership with humanity shows even here. As with the man, God asks the woman what she has done. Some level of responsibility must be take, however slight.

Yahweh, I want to be honest before you and name my sins. I want not to hide behind excuses or reasons, but it is difficult. To hide is so simple. Yahweh, I trust you; help my lack of trust.
Day 14: Psalm 14:1-7
The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God. v 2
I wrote a phrase a couple of years ago: holiness is direction, not destination. In other words, holiness is tending toward God and God only. It is not arrival at any sort of completeness. It is pointing our lives in the direction of God's glory, just as God himself is pointed in the direction of his glory.

Yes, there will be course corrections. But I think it is the trendline that matters.
Day 15: Jeremiah 17:5-10
Thus says the LORD:
"Cursed is the man who trusts in man
and makes flesh his strength,[a]
whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,
in an uninhabited salt land.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose trust is the LORD. v 5-7

Once again, I see it is about the tending. The deed Yahweh judges is the tending of the heart, the object of trust. Do I trust humanity or do I trust Yahweh?

God, my tending is not pure, but I do trust.

OFF TO RESURGENCE

Before this morning, I would have called it a retreat, but I don't think I want to retreat anymore:

Retreat: The process of going backward or receding from a position or condition gained.

Resurgence: 1. A continuing after interruption; a renewal. 2. A restoration to use, acceptance, activity, or vigor; a revival.

And I will not be silent
I will not be quiet anymore

Pray for the tfb college group, that God would grab us by the cheeks and turn our faces to gaze upon his face. We're off to Lake Arrowhead.

ONLY ONE THING: PRESENCE

I think God might be telling me something. This week's topic: the presence of God. Something's happening and I am full of angst (at least) until it is made clear.

On the same topic Mark H says,
there is only one answer: the tangible, manifest, presence of God

We don't need debates. We need His presence. Neither does the unbelieving world need slickly presented church services. They're genuinely hungry and thirsty for His presence too. They'll accept all manner of amateurishness and mess if only the presence of God is tangible. Isn't that what the gospel is all about?

BEDROCK BELIEFS lesson two readings

UPDATE: week's lectios complete. God is good, is he not!

Day 6: Exodus 15:11-18
There are hidden parts of my self—hidden from others, hidden from me. How are these parts changed? How do I get to the place where I can recognize and confess them in community? Maybe a first step is daily, hourly, maybe minute-by-minute remembering who God is. Maybe asking the question in verse 11 over and over, rewriting it, asking it anew. Maybe.

Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
Day 7: John 1:1-4; Hebrews 2:14-15
Human, earthed life has been made holy by his presence. I do not understand how it is that God himself took on flesh. I do not understand how it is that the Divine Logos, the Second Person of the Triune God is even now the God-Man. I have no words—not even 1000-word pictures—adequate to the task of explanation. All I have is vague shadows, mere outlines, yet even these amaze me beyond comprehension.
Day 8: Psalm 90:1-17
Not sure if it slips my mind or gets pushed out by self, but too often I don't remember that God is not manageable and tidy. He does not fit neatly into my plans. He confronts all my plans and and my unplans.

(3-6)You return man to dust
and say, "Return, O children of man!"
For a thousand years in your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past,
or as a watch in the night.

You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream,
like grass that is renewed in the morning:
in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it fades and withers.
Day 9: Psalm 139:1-12
This week has been filled with undefined angst. A reminder of God's vastness (and my smallness) and holiness (and my natural uncleanness) is in order. Thank you God that the knowledge of you is too much. You are too vast to comprehend. You are too holy to stand before. And yet, you have taken up residence in my soul and I stand holy in your presence. I have no words.
Day 10: Psalm 139:13-24
Yahweh, help me to put myself in places where I will remember. I intend intentionality. I may start small. That is all I can do. But I will not stop and I will NOT be silent.

BIBLE 'TIL I'M DONE: JAN 6

Isaiah 36:1-22

Isaiah 36:18-20
Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"

TRINITY and the PEOPLE OF GOD

[this is a rough poem/lyric summary of a lesson series taught in the TFB college ministry]

Truth spoken,
Desperate and harsh.
Three-thousand survive the wince,
Fleeing to the kingdom.

Truth lived,
Beautiful and real.
Day after day the broken and lost,
Gathering as the found and healed. (Acts 2:40-47)

Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
Three-in-One, who closed the gap.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
We his people, we his house. (Eph 2:11-22)

Humanity crafted,
Many and one.
Blessed as rulers, partners with God
Bearing his glory. (Gen 1:27-28)

Humanity crafted,
Redeemed and new.
Spirit-helped lovers of God,
Imaging the Son. (Rom 8:28-29)

Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
Spoke the worlds, felt the deep.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
Source of living, source of light. (Gen 1:1-5; Jn 1:1-5)

Son commissioned,
Immersed and blessed.
Linked to the prophets, the Father’s loved Son,
Speaking the kingdom.

Son commissions:
Immerse and teach.
Sends to the nations the Son’s loved saints,
Preaching the kingdom. (Mat 3:13-17; 28:16-20)

Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
Eternal God, he who rules.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
Only Savior, only Lord. (Rev 1:4-8)

Body gathered,
Many yet one.
Each member crafted, needed and called,
Serving as one.

Body gathered,
One yet many.
Each member different, shaped and blessed,
Caring as one. (1 Cor 12:12-27)

THE BIBLE

updated 1/4/07--2 Peter lectio added, corrections to 2 Peter and Psalm 119 verse numbers

This January I'm teaching Bedrock Beliefs (intro to theology) at church. One of the assignments is lectio divina on five passages each week. The January 7 session is The Bible. My lectio responses will be added as completed.

Psalm 19:7-14
How often I come to the Word as if it were a textbook and reading/studying as mere preparation for teaching. Rather, I ought to come with eagerness and submission, expecting to hear God, to be poked by God, and to be changed by God.
Hebrews 1:1-4
Today’s reading leaves me with questions, and one question in particular: Since we have the Word of God in print, what does it look like to read and speak this written Word in light of the Father’s speaking his Word through the incarnate Son?

Do we cast aside the ink on paper? I think not. But what we are to do escapes me for the moment, though I have an inkling that it has much to do with reading and speaking the Word in the company of God’s people, living out the Word for God’s glory and for the sake of the world.
2 Peter 1:16-21
Interpretive humility is the only proper stance. But this humility must not be of the sort upon which others wipe their feet. Rather, this humility boldly points to the Word and to the God of the Word, clearly declaring, yet always submitting to correction. The revealed Word in words--the Bible--is the source and my observations, reasonings, and summaries are always subject to correction by this same Word.
Psalm 119:169-176

2 Timothy 3:14-17

THE BODY IS WHO WE ARE

But as it is,
God arranged the members in the body,
each one of them,
as he chose.
...
But God has so composed the body,
giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,
that there may be no division in the body,
but that the members
may have the same care for one another.
...
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
vv. 18, 24b-25, 27

================

I’ll be honest: I want to be a catalyst. I want to be one of the persons that future spiritual leaders point to and say, “That’s where I learned to think theologically.”

That is, I think, my main task in the college ministry—and maybe elsewhere. I’m a horrible administrator. I much too blunt to be a caring encourager. My mind wanders too much to be a good listener or a prayer warrior. I require too much thinking time to be an evangelist.

But one thing I do. I think out loud. That is, for now, my task as a body part. I am not enough; no more than the encourager or the administrator is enough. The body is all of us.

Here, I think, is Paul’s point about the body:
Diversity without division.
Unity without uniformity.

This is who we are.

BIBLE 'TIL I'M DONE: DEC 30

Isaiah 32:9-35:10

Isaiah 35:1-10
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the LORD,
the majesty of our God.

Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who have an anxious heart,
"Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you."

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
