Last night at
TNBS, while looking at the
key ideas and questions, one of the members highlighted an important point by questioning my wording.
- The judgment of the nations forces the people of God to see that their help is in God alone.
- The future repentance of the nations forces the people of God to see that God alone is worthy of worship.
In Isaiah, as elsewhere in the prophets, God forces his people to see the truth. He does not force them to conform to the truth. God's freedom and human freedom are preserved. In the case of Judah hearing Isaiah's shocking prophecy, they did not conform to the truth and so God sent them into captivity via Babylon.
We, like the Judahites, have an uncanny ability to see the truth and yet refuse to respond appropriately. This ought not to be so.
