Justice is a sure thing, but do we really want it?

Key idea. God's justice is praiseworthy because all evil will receive its just reward. Thankfully, Jesus has offered to foot the bill.

Instinct for fairness. One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of justice is a little kid crying out through tears, “But Mom, it's not fair.” We have an instinct for justice, knowing--feeling--that folks should not get away with stuff. Even when we are the ones doing the stuff we know deep down we should be in trouble.

Justice is a sure thing. Well, there is good news for all us born and raised fairness czars: God will carry out justice. Every act of stuff will be paid for. Of course, we're the ones doing the stuff--in other words, all us humans. That feels, shall we say, mixed. It's great news when those who do the horrific receive justice, but bad news for the tellers of little white lie or the stealers of pencils. Well, sin is sin. Sin earns death. That's justice.

Grace is a better thing. Thanks be to God that he also exercises grace and mercy. For all who trust him rather than trusting themselves, he poured out his grace and mercy by taking our death debt upon himself and paying it in full. This applies not only to the doers of so-called little sins (as if) but also to the doers of the so-called biggies. But there's more. He also pours out his grace, giving us forever life with him.

The bottom line. So, none of the stuff gets swept under the rug. It's all paid for with the blood of Jesus. Only one question remains: Whom do you trust? Trust yourself, and you'll be paying that death yourself. Trust Jesus, and he's already paid it and has forever life at the ready.

Choose.
