Main idea: Knowing God in his holiness and glory provides the necessary context to comprehend his mercy and grace. Not getting it is a problem.
What I know about knowing God in his holiness and glory centers in two areas of my experience. I know about this intellectually as a seminary graduate and emotionally as one who sins. Unfortunately, the experiential middle that connects the two is basically missing. Adding to this, my ways of thinking lean toward intellectual engagement, having grown up and lived my life in a Bible teaching church culture that emphasizes head knowledge. These are not excuses, but they are hurdles.
I also know that knowing God in his holiness and glory is just as necessary as knowing him in his grace and mercy. I think it's likely that we cannot grasp the depth of his grace and mercy without comprehending the height of his holiness and glory.
I don’t know about you, but I need my ears open to God's voice, especially his holiness. I need him to open my ears to hear. We need him to open our ears and turn our hearts toward him and remind us of his deliverance. Let us worship and reverence him alone so that his glory shines through us (reflection on Psalm 85).
