Knowing about someone, even being acquainted with them, is not the same as knowing them. Knowing in the person-to-person sense means focusing on the person with the intention to love that person. Noticing their words or actions is a channel to knowing them as who they are, but it is not the act of knowing.
Person-to-person knowing takes time and is always developing. It has components that words cannot well express except in imagery and poetry. I'm not saying this type of knowing is a sappy romance novel or a heartwarming buddy movie--though these are popular for a reason. Rather, this is friendship without masks, at least in its pure form.
We all need friendships that don't require us to put on a show. We need this with humans, and we need this with God.
