The human tendency to move toward hierarchy makes it hard to function as a community of siblings with one Lord. We find it difficult to trust that the Spirit will work in and through the gathering of sisters and brothers called The Church, so we set up systems and procedures. We write up mission statements and set in place accountabilities. But without trust in the Spirit as he works in the community of faith, all these structures tend toward lording it over one another rather than submitting to the one Lord, Jesus.
We too often exist in a state of unsiblingness. How did we get here?
- We are part of an individualistic and fluid tribal society, and its priorities pound us.
- Humans have a problem with a deep desire to be gods rather than serve God.
- Faith is hard. Sight is easy.
I don't think I've ever been part of a company of siblings that is sufficiently committed to the one Lord and one another for us to let go of the reins of control and fly as the body of Christ. Yet, despite the difficulty and rarity, we remain a company of siblings by nature.
Becoming a company of siblings by nurture is an essential part of our cooperation with the Spirit.
