WITH EVER INCREASING CLARITY...

From Journey to the Cross: Friday, February 25, 2005

"Coming to Christ doesn’t call for the right answer, the right genes, or the right tools. It calls for letting loose of those things which we grasp most tightly, so that our open hands can seek the Christ."

Two books come to mind.

First, Yaconelli's Messy Spirituality. We're reading this in the tfbcollege bible discussion right now. With him, I wonder what if “that messiness is the workshop of authentic spirituality, the greenhouse of faith, the place where the real Jesus meets the real us” (p.15)?

Second, Nouwen's With Open Hands, which I read a number of years ago. A quote from the back cover:

"Prayer is a way of life which allows you to find a stillness in the midst of the world where you open your hands to God's promises and find hope for yourself, your neighbor, and your world."
Finally, 2 Corinthians 4:7 ESV
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us."

In our pretension--our mask of pseudo-righteousness--do we hinder God's work in us? With ever increasing clarity, I'm thinking, yes, it does.
