It's just too easy to trust circumstances

Main Idea. Circumstances are right here and so easy to perceive. We think they are solid because our senses are dulled to the Divine reality.

Dulled Senses. We are rather more like the servant who could not see the armies of God than we are like Elisha who could see them (2 Kings 6). Elisha prayed that God would open the servant's eyes. God answered, and the servant saw that they were being protected by an army of angels. Like Elisha's servant, our senses--and I refer to mental, not physical faculties--are dull. We have difficulty perceiving the works of God, and we need someone who can see to pray for our eyes to be opened.

Sharpened Senses. The other side of the deal, then, is to learn how Elisha learned. I know he was mentored by Elijah, but I wonder what else he did to have this kind of relationship with God. Or, was his sensitivity merely an aspect of his gift of prophecy? His gift likely explains some of his capacity, but I think not all of it. I don't know the rest yet.

What I Know for Now. What I do know is that we can trust God regardless of circumstances because (1) he requires it and has given us the capacity, (2) his loyal love is always for us, and (3) is justice is certain. May we always proclaim God's love and justice, even when justice seems scary (Psalm 71).
