Main idea. Engagement and relationship prepare us for the Kingdom of God by developing skills, knowledge, and expectations, honed by experiences with God and formation by God.
God is Knowable. God has made himself knowable by revealing information about himself in nature and Scripture and revealing himself in the incarnation and indwelling. Since the Kingdom is all about eternal relationship with God, his knowability is excellent news.
Skills and knowledge. We know about God through his two books: Nature and Scripture. Engagement with Nature and Scripture prepares us for the kingdom by training us to discern his truth and teaching us with his truth. Nature proclaims the to about God's divinity and power (Romans 1). Scripture proclaims the good news of Jesus, giving us real hope (Romans 15).
Expectation. Our relationship with Son and Spirit is a foretaste of heaven, for heaven is all about living in the presence of God. The incarnate Christ is the center of who we are and all we do (though we too often fail to act like it). The Spirit indwells us, pointing us to Christ and crying out to the Father for us. The more aware we are of these relationships, the more prepared we become for the Kingdom.
Experiences and formation. Relationship with Son and Spirit teaches us what it is like to know God and forms us to be more and more like Christ. Indeed, relationship is central, for all who have a relationship of trust and love with Christ are in him for eternity.
There is only one logical response to this:
The time is now. In Matthew 25 we see that Christ's return is imminent. He can return it anytime, ushering in the wedding feast and Kingdom. So, each and all of us must prepare, be ready, and prepare more (reflection on Sunday sermon at TFB, Feb 24, 2019).
