BIBLE 'TIL I'M DONE: MAY 31

2 Samuel 9:13
So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet.

2 Samuel 10:12
Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what seems good to him." 13So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.

2 Samuel 12:5-6
Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity."

LET'S TALK LEGACY

By God's grace, I will continue to serve as President of Biola University with enthusiasm and commitment until June 30, 2007. On May 31, 2007, I will have completed 25 years in the president's office and on June 7, 2007, Anna Belle and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage. It seems like an appropriate time to step aside. On July 1, 2007, I will assume the title of President Emeritus bestowed on me by the Board.
Clyde Cook
Biola University : Office of the President
When you look at BIOLA today, much of its shape is due to the influence of one man: Clyde Cook. Now, he may--and in fact, likely would--correct this idea immediately and name a boatload of people who deserve to be named as well, but that is the sort of man he is. His humility, humor, sense of mission, grace, knack for remembering an amazing number of names, and a few specific incidents have earned him a place on my list of role models.

One: At my BS commencement in 1998, the speaker gave an amazingly short address. After speaking about his wife and son, he said, "If you really want to make an impact for Christ, love your spouse and spend time with your kids," three times and then he sat down. Honestly, I was--and am--a bit miffed. The classic memory, though, is Dr. Cook coming to the podium and asking, "Do we prorate by the word?" Classic. Funny. Pointed.

Two: I am walking down Biola Ave on the way to work when a car pulls up next to me. The passenger side window rolls down and there is Dr. Cook's smiling face asking if I would like a ride. I say yes. Now, other people give me rides. This is not extraordinary. That is the point.

Three: I was walking around somewhere in Metzger Hall and happened to pass Dr. Cook. He stopped and mentioned that the President's Leadership Team had prayed for me that morning. He did not know it, but at that particular moment I was having an over abundance of stress. Amazing how God works through the ordinary: they pray through the employee roster, by name, and repeat when they finish, so my name came up because it was on the schedule. We met in the hall 'by chance.' He mentioned the prayer. God worked. Nice.

I must say, I will miss him. He is the only university president I have known, not only at all, but also as friendly acquaintance. He is the face of BIOLA to the world. He is also a regular guy. That is saying a lot.

During this next year, as the Board transitions BIOLA to new leadership, Dr. Cook will no doubt continue leading with heart and head, the way he has led for 25 years. I have not always agreed, but I have always known where he stood and have always trusted his heart.

The next person to fill the corner office will by no means fill his shoes. As with any of us, no one can actually do that. In Clyde Cook, that person--and indeed the rest of us--have a legacy worthy of following.

2 Samuel 6:20-23
And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, "How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!" And David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the LORD--and I will make merry before the LORD. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor." And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

I'VE DECIDED TO DANCE

minor updates in spelling, etc 9/20/2007

I'll do a more extensive reflection later, after grades are in and my papers are returned. For now, on this first Saturday after the last week of my first term in the Th.M. program I set for myself two related intentions:

(1) I intend to discover and master the monkey bars.
There are truths that are steadfast and immovable. While we may not know them completely, yet we can know them with certainty--with the certainty of faith. I intend to work hard to discover these truths and learn them well. This is one part of my mastery.
(2) I intend to learn how to dance.
There is skill in thinking theologically, trusting the steadfast and immovable truths and having the skill and passion to play and create. These truths have implications and applications that, like dancing on the monkey bars, are intimately related to that which is steadfast and also intimately related to the theologian and his/her community. I intend to master these truths, master the skills, and then dance.
So, I challenge myself to learn to dance on the monkey bars. I challenge others to join me.

MORE CHUNK READING IN 2 TIMOTHY
2 Timothy 1:7
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:9a
[God] who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace...

A letter by Pseudonymous Paulus Laurus

Timothy,

I know life in ministry sucks for you right now. It sucks for me, too. But God is good and God is great. We dare not do anything less than thank him with words, thoughts, intentions, and actions. He has given us so much--so much that I think—no, I know--I shall be able to contain neither it nor myself.

I’m stuck here on death row. I know my number’s up soon. Even so, look around and see God’s Word acting beyond what any human could even consider.

Then there’s you, over in Ephesus, surrounded by theological liars, arguing about stupid “special knowledge” and saying that anything goes. I know you feel pummeled, but I know you know the truth about God and the truth about your calling. So, I say to you what I say to myself: Act like it!

God is great and God is good, and his grace is more than we will ever need. Even when life sucks, our lives don’t suck.

Live like ya mean it.

Paul

BIOLA ON NIGHTLINE

update: video link added

So, I just finished watching the Nightline segment on Biola. The segment was about our abstinence policy (see student life for info on that), but one statement stuck out: the journalist said Biola practiced "new age, touchy-feely Christianity"... wow, gotta wonder what he thinks Christianity is like. I don't think very many people would describe Biola as new age, touchy-feely. It is a loving place though (despite what one may assume after reading BUBBS threads). I am very glad and blessed to work there and go to school there.

EXPERIMENT IN TEACHING PREP

So, this past Tuesday I challenged the TFB collegians to engage in a bible study practice many of us do not normally practice: reading the text (see link below) over and over, praying, and listening for God to speak. I also asked them to have paper and pencil handy to write down what came to mind. We will begin studying the passage as a group on the evening of June 13.

Well, this is an online companion to that experiment. My hope is that they--and anyone who cares to join us--will post comments here and get the horizontal conversation going.

We'll see how it goes.

INSTRUCTIONS
  • Read prayerfully, slowly, and repeatedly.
  • Write down what comes to mind.
  • Post some thoughts, questions, observations, confusions, and anything else that comes to mind here.
  • Keep doing it until June 13.

This morning I finished the 3,788 word research paper on the ecclesiology of Stanley Hauerwas. I still have about 45 minutes of reading to do. Then I breath, sleep, and wait.

One regret: not starting the Th.M. in the fall so I could get the 'how to do Th.M. level research" class under my belt before beginning other stuff. Writing the two precises and the research paper has been more stressful than usual because the standards are higher and I do not have the entire tool set as of yet. This gets corrected in the fall.

One self-congratulation: deciding to do a weekly journal during the entirety of my Th.M. career. It's been only one term, but I am already convinced that weekly journaling on what one is learning is a crucial part of the process. I shall continue and I recommend it to all--regardless of what you are studying (even if it really is underwater basket weaving...)

VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOVE

LECTIO ON 1 JOHN 2:1-12

Intimate knowledge
-->law keeping
-->sibling loving

Meditatio

We start with the recognition that we’re mixed (2:1-2): it’s possible not to sin, but we sin anyway. God takes care of us. First, Jesus is our helper, helping us be more able not to sin. Second, Jesus IS the way of reconciliation. In other words, god himself is the way God takes care of our sin, our shattered relationship with him, and the enmity between us and God.

Lest we think this is a mere judicial transaction, John begins talking about knowing Jesus. This is not cognitive knowing, but relational knowing—more like spouses or best friends than like history class. If we know Jesus, then we keep his word. It is word—his command—is to love like he loves. The evidence for this is our love for Christian siblings.

For me the crux of this is the vertical and horizontal relationships. They are tied together and it seems one cannot be a God-follower without having both. It seems to be all or nothing. Yes, there is a growth curve from more messy to less messy to not messy at all (AKA heaven), but it seems we either have the vertical-horizontal or we have nothing at all.

Oratio

God, I do see these in me, I think less messy than before, but tons to go. I wonder, though, how can I both embody this truth and encourage collegians to reflect on it?

So, we're in the Greenline train at Rosa Parks and we hear this garbled message of the loudspeaker telling us, as far as we could determine, that the train would be stopping at Long Beach due to... who knew what. So, I got off the train and went down to catch the 121. But there were two busloads of people waiting for an already full 121. I'm not doing the sardine thing. Instead, I hopped on the Blue Line (which apparently had it's own trouble) and went to Compton Station to catch the favored 125--which arrived just as I did. Only an hour late. Not bad.

THEOLOGY IS NOT A SELF STUDY COURSE

This week wrapped up Advanced Methods of Educational Instruction. This has probably been one of the most—if not the most—significant course of my seminary career. I have learned about teaching—and especially about my own skills and growth areas. I have been given and have developed a set of “starter tool,” so to speak. I have experienced graduate teaching and I LOVED it. But by far the most important lesson was learned as this course intertwined with Contemporary Theology. That lesson is that if I am to do theology then that “I” must always be a “we.”

The first “we” would be vertical. Scripture is the source, but God himself is the teacher. If theology is not done in the context of prayer and worship then it is not theology. There are those who disagree, but I cannot see otherwise. Theology is not merely an intellectual pursuit, though it is that. Theology involves my whole self in a love relationship with God, articulating the meaning of God’s Word.

The second “we” would be horizontal. I converse with the church through time and space. I cannot and must not do theology alone. It must always be conversation and disputation with other God-followers. This brings together the varying perspectives and even opposing perspectives in the hope that together we might begin to see the faintest contours of God’s truth.

Too often in theology we talk past one another, limiting our argument to the extremes in our opponent’s position. There are two things—at least—wrong with that practice. First, a conversation/disputation can only occur—and be fruitful—if we work hard at understanding the other from their perspective. We must struggle to describe their position as they would describe it.

Second, if the partners in this conversation/disputation are followers of Jesus, then we are most certainly not opponents. Yes, we may vehemently disagree, but we are not opponents. We are siblings. What is needed is much more that the admonition to “keep it clean.” Even the pagans do that. We are children of the Most High God. We ought to act like it as we do our theology.

Theology is not—nor can it ever be—a self study program. It always and only takes place with God and with our fellow God-followers.

Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.

WHERE SHOULD THEOLOGY START? pt 2

Last week I started thinking about where theology should start. The topic has come to the fore as I finish up my first term in the Master of Theology program at Talbot.

On to part two:

If theology does indeed begin with God—with Theos—then the starting point of a theology provides a crucial area for critique. This is so even when the theological conclusions are coherent and biblical. Thus, while we continue to critique other theologies (a much needed task) we Evangelicals must be all the more diligent to critique our own theology. For example, while we the Bible as the only rule of faith and practice, our actual practice often has more to do with business administration and Robert’s Rules of Order. I think we must ask, what would Christian life together look like if we started with God and his intended ends, and then traced the trajectory from where we are to where God is leading us? I daresay much might change: programs, money, missions, staff, structure, etc.

One’s starting place, then, determines one trajectory. This is the case for two current theologies: Feminist Liberation Theology (and here) and Postmodern Theology. Feminist Liberation Theology begins with the suffering women have suffered under patriarchalism. All of theology is understood—and reinterpreted—through that lens. The trajectory then becomes getting women from where they are to full freedom from patriarchalism. Anything not coordinate with that trajectory is cast aside or recast.

Postmodern Theology begins with an emphasis on the finitude and fallenness of humanity. All of theology is understood—and reinterpreted—through that lens. This trajectory traces the path from epistemological arrogance to epistemological humility and from prideful universal conceptual schemes to humble contextual conceptual schemes. Again, anything not coordinate with that trajectory is cast aside or recast.

Now, let us be clear. The problem is in the location of the starting place not in the content per se. Women have suffered—and too many still suffer—under patriarchalism. This situation MUST be addressed by theology. But that does not make women’s suffering an adequate starting place for theology. Only Theos—God—is adequate. The same can also be said of the postmodern focus on finitude and fallenness. Humans are finite and fallen, but that truth is not an adequate starting place for theology. In both examples theology goes awry because the focus is on humanity.

This is not to say that God-focused theology can go on without critique. In fact, these two theologies offer important critiques. The critique from Feminist Liberation Theology tells us that we have spent insufficient effort tracing the trajectory from where we are to who God is and what he desires: a humanity living together with God as the only Lord. The critique from Postmodern Theology tells us that we have often mistakenly acted and believed as if we had God’s own knowledge of himself. We do not. Let us listen and critique.

==============================

Next week I’ll likely ponder something Mark brought up on his blog: the need to sit under the teaching of the Holy Spirit rather than acting as if the Bible were a self-help manual for self-study.

I think the response would be more intense if, say, the artist had placed cameras, capturing close-ups of the cloth blowing in the breeze, or if there had been some sort of perspective gathering forum--a journal, camera, whatever.

As it is, most seem to pass by wondering what and why. But, then, maybe that was the artist's intention...

TRANSLATING FIRST JOHN

We're traveling through First John during Sunday Collegium using personal and group Lectio. During my own lectio of 1:5, my mind went to the light paintings I have made with my camera. As my first creative offering to the Collegium, I created a framed piece for the college room (recreated for the web), to help us think through what it means when John says, God is light and darkness-in-him is not, not at all.

Two things come to mind right off:
  • Light at play.
  • Light clearly distinct from darkness.

seeming foolishness
of waiting
enemies on all sides
yet forging ahead is cursed
and the promise is torn away

scene two
seeming wisdom
of waiting
enemies on all sides
yet forging ahead is blessed
and the enemy falls away

1 Samuel 8:7
And the LORD said to Samuel, "Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

1 Samuel 10:25-27
Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the LORD. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. Saul also went to his home at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. But some worthless fellows said, "How can this man save us?" And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.

SUMMER READING...

...is just around the corner.

Yippee!!

See What I'm Reading to see what's on the top of the list.

WHERE SHOULD THEOLOGY START?

Theology goes awry when Theos is removed as the subject of inquiry. For example, Process Theology starts with the subject of evolutionary change and interprets all of reality—God included—through that lens. In doing this, Process Theologians take a valid question (how change relates to an apparently unchanging God) and, by assuming change as unchanging, reshape the unchanging God into a changing God.

Liberation Theology provides another example. This theology reinterprets all reality through the lens of oppression, rather “oppressions”, for specific, local oppressions become the lens. Liberation Theologians reinterpret all God’s ways through “God’s preferential option for the poor.”

In both examples, Christianity becomes idolatry, for in each case something besides God is given interpretational priority. If God truly is God, then theology must begin with Theos. All else is interpreted and given meaning by him. Of course, this notion has an important caveat: we are human and ALL our knowledge is partial. Therefore, even as we practice “theology from above” (some info here), we must hold this theology humbly, listening to the voices of others for important corrections to our understandings. In all, there is a balance of holding to what we believe to be true and remaining open to critique.

BIBLE IN A YEAR--MAY 5

I made the decision to switch from the One Year Bible to Laridian's Bible in One Year. While the OYB has been good, I have been bothered by the four track model. So, I've committed to read a bit more each day and read the bible through Acts for the rest of this year.

There is none holy like the LORD;
there is none besides you;

Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
